Jumps in an L-shape: two squares one way, then one square sideways. The only piece that can leap clean over others.
Slides diagonally any number of squares. Each bishop stays on its starting square colour for the whole game.
Slides horizontally or vertically any number of squares. At its best on open files — and it teams up with the king for castling.
Slides horizontally, vertically or diagonally any number of squares. The most powerful piece on the board.
Moves one square in any direction. If it gets checkmated the game is over — keep it safe and castle early.
